overview: Developing your Coaching Philosophy

Welcome to Athlete Assessments’ Coaching Philosophy Program!

The distinguishing factor of great coaches is their constant pursuit for performance in their athletes and themselves. The very best know that they don’t ever ‘arrive’ and are always looking to further develop themselves, no matter their experience or achievements. That’s what makes them the best.

Just as leaders in business and industry define their leadership philosophies, it’s equally critical for coaches to articulate their Coaching Philosophy. This foundational step shapes not only how you coach but also why you coach. It guides your approach, influences your decisions, and impacts those you lead.

In this program, you’ll be guided through the process of defining your Coaching Philosophy, whether you’re in sport, business, or another industry. We’ve distilled years of experience, research, and insights from leading coaches to create this comprehensive learning journey, designed to help you clarify your purpose and refine your approach.

Your Coaching Philosophy is a living document – something that will evolve as you grow. As you progress through this program and your career, you’ll revisit and update it, using your personal insights to further define what’s important to you and how you lead others.

Key Steps for Developing your Coaching Philosophy

What is a Coaching Philosophy?
In this module, you will explore the concept of a Coaching Philosophy and why it serves as the foundation for effective leadership in both sport and business. You'll learn what it means to define your own Coaching Philosophy, aligning it with your values and goals. You will also learn how understanding purpose behind your coaching, shapes how you lead and influence others.
Step One: What is Most Important to You?
In this module, you'll begin the journey of defining your Coaching Philosophy by identifying the non-negotiable values that shape your coaching role. Through a Values Assessment, you'll gain greater self-awareness by distinguishing between the values you desire and those that are essential to how you coach. This process will help you evaluate how your behaviors are influenced by these core values, laying the foundation for a clear and consistent Coaching Philosophy.
Step Two: Learn From Your Own Experiences
In this module, you'll explore the importance of authenticity in coaching - being true to yourself and bringing the best of who you are to your role. You'll reflect on how your past experiences as an athlete can shape your Coaching Philosophy, whether through positive role models or by learning what not to do. By examining the behaviors of coaches who influenced you, both positively and negatively, you'll gain valuable insights into the type of coach you want to be. This module includes an exercise to help you start thinking about these key coaching examples.
Step Three: What is your Coaching Style?
In this module, you’ll explore your coaching style, which is largely shaped by your Behavioral Style. You’ll reflect on how you coach, your strengths, challenges, and the environment in which you perform best. Additionally, you’ll be introduced to Athlete Centered Coaching and learn how to adapt across the four distinct coaching styles to achieve more effective outcomes with your athletes.
Step Four: Discover your Coaching Philosophy
In this module, you will consolidate the insights gained from the previous steps to create a clear framework for your coaching behavior. By identifying the behaviors you wish to exhibit consistently and understanding their impact on your athletes, you’ll shape how you conduct yourself as a coach. Additionally, this step will help you reflect on and honestly assess how you define ‘success,’ further refining your Coaching Philosophy.
Step Five: Keep it Visible and Alive
Now that you’ve established your Coaching Philosophy, this module focuses on incorporating it into your everyday coaching practice. The key is to keep your philosophy visible, serving as a constant reminder of the behaviors you aim to exhibit and the values you want to uphold. This ongoing reflection will help ensure your philosophy guides your actions and decision-making consistently.
